Choosing the Right Cement: OPC vs PPC vs PSC

|5 min read|By Sri Kanya Editorial Team

Cement is one of the most critical construction materials, and choosing the right type ensures durability and strength of your structure. The three main types available in India are OPC, PPC, and PSC.

OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement)

OPC is the most common type, available in 43 and 53 grades. OPC 53 grade offers higher strength and is preferred for high-rise buildings, bridges, and pre-stressed concrete. It sets faster, making it ideal for projects with tight timelines.

PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement)

PPC is made by adding fly ash to clinker. It offers better durability, lower heat of hydration, and improved resistance to chemical attacks. PPC is recommended for general construction, plastering, and marine structures. Brands like Ramco PPC and UltraTech PPC are popular choices.

PSC (Portland Slag Cement)

PSC uses blast furnace slag as an additive. It provides excellent durability and is particularly suitable for mass concrete works, foundations, and structures exposed to sulphate-rich soils.

For residential construction, PPC is usually the best all-round choice. For structural columns and beams requiring early strength, use OPC 53 grade. Always check the manufacturing date — cement loses strength over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cement is best for house construction — OPC or PPC?

Use PPC for general construction, plastering, and non-structural work. Use OPC 53 for structural elements (columns, beams, foundations) where early strength is critical. PPC is the better all-round choice for most residential buildings.

How long can cement be stored before it loses strength?

Cement should ideally be used within 3 months of manufacturing. After 3 months, it starts losing strength due to moisture absorption. Always check the manufacturing date printed on the bag and store bags off the ground in a dry area.
