Construction Material Checklist for New Home Builders

Building a home is one of the biggest investments you’ll make. Having the right materials at each stage ensures quality construction and avoids costly delays.

Order steel and cement 2–3 days before each construction stage begins. Ordering too early means storage risks (rust for steel, moisture for cement). Ordering too late causes idle labor costs of ₹5,000–10,000 per day.

Foundation Stage Materials

  • TMT bars — 12mm and 16mm for footings, 8mm and 10mm for stirrups
  • Cement — OPC 53 grade for foundations
  • Aggregates, sand, and binding wire
  • HSCRM-grade TMT for coastal areas like Vizag (corrosion resistance)

Column & Beam Stage

Higher diameter TMT bars (16mm, 20mm, 25mm for main bars, 8mm for rings/stirrups). This is where steel quality matters most — choose FE500D or FE550D grade for better earthquake resistance. Binding wire usage increases at this stage.

Slab Stage

TMT 8mm and 10mm bars are used extensively for slab reinforcement. 12mm bars for main load-bearing spans. This stage consumes the most steel in typical residential construction.

Brick, Plastering & Finishing

PPC cement for mortar and plastering, sand, and construction chemicals (waterproofing compounds for bathrooms and terraces).

Don’t forget waterproofing at the plastering stage. Apply integral waterproofing compound in external wall plaster and dedicated membrane waterproofing on terraces and bathrooms. This is far cheaper than fixing leaks later.
